Green
Tea
QUESTION:
I have recently been told that adding concentrated green tea
droplets to approx 3 of my regular 8 glasses of water per
day will enhance my health - prevent disease, promote my immune
system and enhance my weight loss/maintenance...is this true
and is this safe?
ANSWER:
Green tea contains polyphenols (if you research it you
might also find the words "flavanoids" and "catechins." The
polyphenol epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has been evidenced
in research to act as a pretty powerful anti-oxidant. Its
anti-oxidant properties can play a role in minimizing risk
of cancer. Some studies showed it has the potential to stop
the growth of cancer cells without harming healthy tissues.
As if that's not impressive enough, EGCG has also illustrated
a propensity for lowering LDL (bad cholesterol) levels and
inhibiting the abnormal formation of blood clots.
Green
tea compounds (and black tea) have also shown a reduction
is glucose levels in diabetic rodents. I can keep going. Suffice
it to say, the research shows great promise.
Here's
the challenge. When research shows that something has health
potential, the supplement sellers go wild making claims that
are beyond anything illustrated in a laboratory. Green tea
is now sold as a miracle cure-all tonic and weight loss aid.
Can
it aid in weight loss? Perhaps. It contains caffeine which
does have a thermogenic effect and can increase caloric burn.
Green tea also contains L-theanine, which serves as a mood
elevator and reduces the output of cortisol, the stress hormone
that leads to fat accumulation. Is it a weight loss miracle?
Absolutely not. The role it plays is minimal at best and without
a supportive eating program and a result oriented exercise
regimen it's not likely to result in any signficant reduction.
I
absolutely see the virtues in drinking green tea, or supplementing
with a concentrated extract, but I think of it as additional
ammunition, along with hundreds, perhaps thousands of other
weapons, for battling those tiny little compounds (carcinogens,
free radicals, etc) that can do cellular destruction.
