DHEA
DHEA has been
called "The Mother of All Hormones." It is,
in a sense, the hormone from which all the sex hormones, estrogens
and testosterones are created. The process of hormones
converting from one into another to meet momentary need has
been referred to as "the Hormone Cascade."
While hormones each have their respective roles, they are
all interrelated and hormonal manipulation should not be attempted
randomly.
A recent law
made it possible for hormones to be sold Over the Counter
(OTC) in health food stores and DHEA was the first such product
to come out. It was sold as a great fat burner, energy
enhancer, sex aid, and rejuvenator. The fact is, most
people taking high enough oral dosages of DHEA to have an
effect were playing around with the Hormonal Cascade and were
running the risk of some long term side effects. If
you do go for a serum DHEA test, and a medical practitioner
with experience in hormonal therapy tells you your DHEA levels
have declined, then and only then might supplementation be
therapeutic. If you attempt to elevate DHEA levels and
you haven't suffered a decline in natural production, it is
inevitable that other hormones along the cascade chain will
be affected.
After DHEA became
a hot seller, other "links in the chain," called
"testosterone precursors" made their mark.
